Some Beautiful Stories Behind the Raksha Bandhan Festival And Rakhi festival
Information about this festival is also mentioned in the legends associated with Alexander the Great in 326 BC. The festival of Rakshabandhan is also mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures,
The ancient story explains that Rakshabandhan sisters are not just for married women to celebrate, according to Hindu belief, Indra’s wife Sachi tied a precious and sacred thread on Indra’s wrist for victory when he went to fight the demon warrior named Bali, this story means that Rakshabandhan was celebrated with faith in the safe return of those going to war.
Once, Lord Vishnu defeated King Bali in a battle and gained control over the three worlds. Impressed by Bali’s devotion, Vishnu decided to reside in Bali’s palace. However, Vishnu’s consort, Goddess Lakshmi, disagreed with this plan. Instead, she devised a strategy. Lakshmi tied a sacred thread (rakhi) around Bali’s wrist, symbolically making him her brother. This gesture was significant because in Hindu tradition, a brother who receives a rakhi must protect his sister. Touched by Lakshmi’s gesture and respecting their bond, King Bali asked Lakshmi what she desired as a boon. Lakshmi requested that Vishnu return home with her. Moved by their devotion and bond, King Bali granted Lakshmi’s wish. Thus, Vishnu and Lakshmi returned to their celestial abode, strengthening the belief that the origin of the tradition of rakhi tying is rooted in this tale.
- In another story, during the Rakshabandhan festival, Manasa Devi, sister of Lord Ganesha, visits him to tie rakhi on his wrist. This tradition encourages Lord Ganesha’s sons Subha and Lapha to participate in the Rakshabandhan celebration. They are inspired to give their brothers a sister, which leads them to the creation of Santoshi Ma. Since then, Ganesha’s three siblings, Subha, Latha and Santoshi Ma, gather every year to celebrate Rakshabandhan. This tradition symbolizes the bond of protection and love between siblings, where sisters tie a sacred thread (Rakhi) on their brothers’ wrists and the brothers vow to protect them throughout their lives. It is a joyous occasion that strengthens family ties and celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters in Hindu culture
- At a crucial moment during the Rakshabandhan festival, when Krishna and Draupadi share an important bond of friendship during a battle, she notices Krishna’s injured finger and Draupadi tears off a piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s wound. Satisfied by her affection, Krishna promises to reward her kindness at a crucial moment and later fulfills his promise by coming to Draupadi’s aid when she is in need, underscoring the importance of their deep friendship and mutual respect. This story also connects the raksha bandhan origin..
- In the Mahabharata epic, before engaging in the great war (Mahabharata War), Krishna ties a rakhi on Draupadi. This symbolizes their bond of friendship and mutual respect. Similarly, before Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, allows her youngest son Abhimanyu to enter his own battle, she ties a rakhi on him.
